Working Environment Considerations

  • Temperature Resistance: Petroleum equipment often operates at high temperatures, such as in oil refining furnaces and reactors. Fasteners should be able to maintain their mechanical properties and stability at high temperatures. For example, alloy steels with high chromium and nickel content have good high-temperature resistance and can be used in such environments.

  • Corrosion Resistance: The petroleum environment is rich in various corrosive media, such as crude oil, natural gas containing sulfur compounds, and salt water. Stainless steels, especially those of the 316 and 316L grades, have excellent corrosion resistance and are suitable for use in these applications. In addition, coatings like zinc plating and nickel plating can enhance the corrosion resistance of fasteners.

  • Vibration and Impact Resistance: Drilling equipment and pumping stations in the petroleum industry are prone to vibration and impact. Fasteners need to have good anti-loosening and impact resistance properties. Nuts with self-locking functions and bolts with high strength and toughness are preferred.

Material Selection

  • Carbon Steel: It has good machinability and strength and is relatively inexpensive. However, carbon steel has poor corrosion resistance and is usually used in environments with low corrosion requirements after surface treatment, such as galvanizing.

  • Alloy Steel: It has high strength, hardness, and good wear resistance. Alloy steels containing elements such as molybdenum, vanadium, and chromium are often used in high-pressure, high-temperature, and high-load applications, such as oil well drilling rigs and pressure vessels.

  • Stainless Steel: It has excellent corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties. Austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316 are widely used in petroleum equipment that requires corrosion resistance, such as pipelines, storage tanks, and valves.

Fastener Type Determination

  • Bolts: They are commonly used for connecting two parts that require disassembly. Hex bolts are easy to install and remove, while socket head cap bolts can provide higher torque. In the petroleum industry, flange bolts are often used to connect flanges of pipelines and equipment.

  • Nuts: They are used in conjunction with bolts. Slotted nuts are often used in applications where anti-loosening performance is required, such as in vibrating equipment. Flange nuts have a larger contact area and can provide better stability.

  • Washers: They are used to distribute the load evenly and prevent damage to the surface of the connected parts. Flat washers are the most common type, while spring washers can provide additional anti-loosening function.

Size and Dimension Selection

  • Diameter and Length: The diameter and length of the fasteners should be selected according to the thickness and size of the connected parts. For example, flange bolts need to be long enough to pass through the flange and gasket and have enough threads to ensure a secure connection.

  • Thread Type: Coarse threads are suitable for applications that require quick assembly and disassembly, while fine threads can provide better tightening force and anti-loosening performance. In the petroleum industry, both metric and imperial thread standards are used, so it is necessary to ensure that the thread type is consistent with the equipment.

Manufacturer and Quality Assurance

  • Choose a Reputable Manufacturer: Select manufacturers with rich experience and good reputation in the petroleum fastener industry. They usually have advanced production equipment and strict quality control systems to ensure the quality and performance of their products.

  • Check Quality Certifications: Ensure that the fasteners have relevant quality certifications, such as ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards, ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certifications, etc. These certifications can guarantee the quality and reliability of the fasteners. If you need samples, please contact us.
